Writer of the Month: Louise Erdrich
Louise Erdrich has written twelve novels as well as volumes of poetry, children's books, and a memoir of early motherhood. Her novel Love Medicine won the National Book Critics Circle Award. The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse was a finalist for the National Book Award. She lives in Minnesota with her daughters and is the owner of Birchbark Books, a small independent bookstore.
Erdrich’s latest novel is The Plague of Doves. An unsolved murder of a farm family haunts the small, white, off-reservation town of Pluto, North Dakota. The consequences of this crime and the distortions of truth transform the lives of Ojibwe and shape both communities for the next generation. The descendants of Ojibwe and white intermarry and only the youngest generation, of mixed blood, remains unaware of the role the past continues to play in their lives. Erdrich's narrators unravel the stories of different generations and families in this corner of North Dakota. Bound by love, torn by history, the two communities' collective stories finally come together in a wrenching truth revealed in the novel's end.
VPL has the following Louise Erdrich publications: Love Medicine; The Beet Queen; Tracks; The Crown of Columbus; The Bingo Palace; The Blue Jay’s Dance; Tales of Burning Love; The Antelope Wife; The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse; The Master Butcher’s Singing Club; Four Souls; The Painted Drum; The Game of Silence; and The Plague of Doves.
What's a Library Worth?
Have you ever wondered how you would pay for the services provided for free by your local library? Here’s a website that can give you a good idea: www.maine.gov/msl/services/calculator.htm. All you need to know is how many times you use your library a month and what services you use. The
calculator will show the estimated value of each service, and the total value of your personal use! What would YOU like to see on the new website?
Vermillion Public Library has recently acquired new web creation software and will be giving its website a new look in the next few months.
What we would like to know is what our patrons would like to see on the website! Would you like to see more photos? Some audio clips? Streaming video of library events? A list of brand new books? We may not be able to incorporate everything you would like, but we would love to hear some ideas!
Drop us an email at vpl@sdln.net ! Please put “vpl website suggestions” in the email subject line.
