One Book South Dakota - Sunday, September 19th, 3-5:00PM
Vermillion Public Library will again be offering patrons the opportunity to participate in “One Book South Dakota,” a program begun in 2003 that encourages people from across the state to read and discuss the same book.
This year, “One Book South Dakota” participants will be reading and discussing What is the What by Dave Eggers. It is the story of Valentino Achak Deng’s remarkable journey from war-torn East Africa to the United States. Valentino is one of the “Lost Boys” of Sudan, a group of young men who were left to wander through the jungles of East Africa because they were separated from their patents during the Sudanese civil war. This book not only describes the hardships Valentino faced in Sudan, but also adjusting to his new life in the United States. This book hits close to home, as South Dakota has one of the largest Sudanese refugee populations in the country.
Those interested in participating in “One Book South Dakota” can sign up for the program and check out a copy of What is the What at the Vermillion Public Library circulation desk. The discussion, led by Jamie Sullivan of Mount Marty College, will take place at the library at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 19. We will also be showing the movie God Grew Tired of Us, a documentary of the Lost Boys of Sudan, on Sunday, October 3 at 3pm.

“One Book South Dakota” was made possible with a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
